The sustained global demand for travel & tourism, together with its ability to generate high levels of employment continues to prove the importance and value of the sector as a tool for economic development and job creation. The demand for travel & tourism in emerging markets like India also continues with pace on the back of expanding economic activity and a large rising middle class willing and able than ever before to travel within and beyond the Indian borders.
According to a WTTC Report, the Indian Travel & Tourism sector generated 22 million jobs directly in 2013 (4.9% of total employment). This includes employment by hotels, travel agents, airlines and other passenger transportation services (excluding commuter services). By 2024, the sector will account for 28 million direct jobs & a total of 44 million jobs in India.
While the current and forecasted demand for travel industry jobs remains robust, the sector continues to face multiple challenges on the supply side. These include lack of qualified and trained manpower, localised supply, inadequate training and development infrastructure as well as unorganized hiring process.
